Melatonin is primarily produced by the pineal gland, in response to darkness.
Benefits of Melatonin
Melatonin has a lot of physiological and biological influences on the body:
helps synchronize sleep patterns
improves sleep quality
it is an antioxidant to free radicals
supports mitochondrial function
protects cells from damage
enhances the immune response
helps regulate inflammation
regulates reproductive hormones
regulates glucose metabolism
regulates digestion and gut mobility
promotes DNA repair and replication
stops cortisol over-secretion in response to stress
has a neuro-protective role in the brain
In the absence of light
A lack of light diminishes the production of the neurotransmitter called Serotonin that is normally made when light gets picked up by the brain and signals the Sympathetic Nervous System. Serotonin is the daytime neurotransmitter that gives us our awareness of space and time (among other things).
Once the release of Serotonin is diminished due to a lack of light, this dampens also the Sympathetic Nervous System and allows for the production of Melatonin by the Pineal Gland.
The inhibition of light is required to create melatonin.
Brainwaves & Restoration
Melatonin as a nighttime neurotransmitter prompts our brain to slow down from Beta to Alpha to Theta down to Delta brainwaves.
Melatonin is the neurotransmitter that allows our body to restore and regenerate as we steep into lower brain frequency waves.
In Delta brainwaves, our bodies can undergo cellular repair, memory consolidation, and even tissue regeneration. This is why sleep is so critical for our human body.
Spirituality, Consciousness and Higher States of Awareness
Melatonin is involved in mystical experiences.
melatonin is believed to influence altered states of consciousness
regulates the REM sleep where lucid dreaming and spiritual visions can occur
higher levels of melatonin deepens the meditative state in which a person can tap into greater levels of awareness and spiritual insight
melatonin primes the brain for transcendental experiences through the influence of the endogenous production of DMT
Melatonin is a KEY biochemical factor in spiritual experiences, dream states, and consciousness expansion.
Enhancing Melatonin Production
Melatonin is simply another biological and neurological mechanism that we can leverage in the “toolbox” of consciousness to elevate our human experience.
We obviously come with a built-in mechanism to induce not only transcendental consciousness states, but we can also enhance our self-regeneration.
There are many ways we can enhance our Melatonin production:
minimize blue-light exposure which is known to suppress melatonin
ensure having 7-9 hours of sleep for a stable circadian rhythm
lessen awake time between 1am and 4am, peak times for melatonin
eat melatonin-rich foods and/or increase tryptophan-rich foods (a precursor to serotonin and melatonin)
support the system with magnesium and B vitamins
reduce stress & cortisol levels
sleep in total darkness
engage in meditative relaxing alpha-inducing rituals
Melatonin is obviously a pretty important regulator for our physiological, mental, and spiritual equilibrium. If there are imbalanced levels of melatonin, it’s possible to experience all kind of different irregular symptoms related to sleep, mental clarity, health stability, immune regulation, longevity, and even spiritual awareness.

This was very interesting. Especially the importance of sunshine during the day and total darkness at night, just like it was in ages long ago.
Thank you. I enjoyed this!
During the pre-industrial days, before electricity and artificial light, human sleep cycles were deeply in sync with natural patterns of light and darkness. Back then, humans didn't work the night shift as often as they do today. Back then, they had healthier melatonin cycles, which could mean they had more frequent and insightful spiritual experiences. Middle-of-the-night intervals were reserved for prayer, meditation, and other quiet activities. Nowadays, we have places like Las Vegas, the city that never sleeps.
